Abstract

This paper discusses the new environment for transportation and intelligent transportation systems in the U.S. National Park Service. First, the Federal Lands Highway Program is described. Next, the 3 major aspects of the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century that relate to the National Park Service are provided. Last, the provisions of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Departments of Interior and Transportation, requiring the development of a plan for a comprehensive effort to improve public transportation in the National Parks, are outlined. Several of the specific goals of these provisions are listed.
