Abstract
Pay-by-Space meters do more than improve streetscapes by removing on average six standard meters for every installation. Because they are in constant contact with a central computer, maintenance can be done as soon as problem is reported, and modular memories permit workers to switch out broken units in a matter of minutes without reprogramming. They can also be programmed to accept various payment methods, including magnetic stripe cards, credit cards and contactless smart cards, in addition to coins. Future versions will enable motorists to pay their parking by cell phone.
