Abstract
Atlanta, Georgia, is in transit training for the 2 million spectators expected to gather there for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. Trial runs at city events, such as the World Series and the Superbowl, have allowed Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) to test its performance as host, chauffeur, and tour guide. This article describes a 2-day Transit Forum in which Atlanta was evaluated on its planning to date. More than 50 transit professionals advised the city on its transportation plan for the 17-day event. The city is borrowing 2,000 buses from transit agencies across the nation, is formulating transit demand strategies, and is showcasing intelligent transportation systems--all to keep spectators moving smoothly to and from Olympic venues.
