Abstract

Due to rapid population growth and economic development, vehicular traffic has become a huge issue, necessitating the urgent need for automation in transportation. This research proposes an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) to regulate and improve the efficiency of traffic flow for actuated traffic control that is suitable for future traffic systems and smart cities. The proposed methodology entails equipping vehicles with latest sensor technology, which can wirelessly communicate with vehicles nearby. The Internet of Vehicles (IoV) is a network of vehicles that communicate with one another and with the Zonal Monitoring Unit to form a network of intelligent devices. The real-time data is transmitted to an Integrated Centralized Satellite System, which develops an efficient algorithm that analyses the collected data for actuated traffic control using Adaptive Signal Control technology. The primary objective of the algorithm is to adaptively optimize the traffic signals and maximize traffic flow rate, resulting in a smooth traffic flow.
