Abstract

Objective To explore the value of pleural needle biopsy in the diagnosis of exudative pleural effusion. Methods The pathologic diagnosis of 63 patients with exudative pleural effusion by pleural needle biopsy were analyzed retrospectively, and the complications of pleural needle biopsy also were analyzed. Results The definitive rate of pathologic diagnosis of pleural needle biopsy for exudative pleural effusion was 86.36%, malignant pleural effusion accounted for 53.03%, and tuberculous pleural effusion accounted for 28.79%. The complications were mainly pain and pneumothorax, without other serious complications. Conclusion In the diagnosis of exudative pleural effusion, pleural needle biopsy is a simple, safe, and effective way, with few complications. Key words: Exudative pleural effusion; Pleural needle biopsy; Pathologic diagnosis
