Abstract
Objective To study the cosmetic effect of radical pterygium removal. Methods The total of 206 patients(263 eyes) with pterygium had been randomly allocated into two groups:group A and group B,who had all received pterygium excision and conjunctival rotation autograft in hospitalization.92 patients(120 eyes) were in group A,who had all received radical pterygium removal, namely, pterygium excision and conjunctival rotation autograft combined with extended fascia removal and the residual conjunctive removed as possible;114 patients(143 eyes) were in group B,who had only received pterygium excision and conjunctival rotation autograft. All the patients of the two groups had been followed up for 24 months, and the cosmetic effect was observed by counting the rate of poor cosmetic eyes including recurrence and regeneration. Results Group A had 17 eyes with poor cosmesis(at recurrence of 14.17%) and group B had 87 eyes with poor cosmesis(at recurrence of 60.84%) respectively. The two groups had significant difference(χ2 = 59.45,P 0.005) by statistical comparative analysis. Conclusion Radical pterygium removal is more effective than pterygium excision and conjunctival rotation autograft for cosmesis.
