Clinical observation of vitapex paste as root canal medicaments against chronic apical periodontitis

Objective To compare the clinical effect of Vitapex paste (calcium hydroxide based paste) and Camphorated Para-monochlorophenol (CP) when used as root canal medicaments. Method 218 patients with chronic apical periodontitis were randomly divided into Vitapex paste group as experimental group and the CP group as control group. The therapeutic effect and incidence rate of endedontic interappointment pain(EIP)between them were compared after filled as root canal medicaments, Result The effective ratio of Vitapex paste group and CP group were 97.25% and 89.91%, respectively. The incidence of EIP of Vitapex paste group and CP group were 4.59% and 16. 51%, respectively. The difference between them was statistically significant (chi-square, P<0.01). Conclusion This study showed that Vitapex paste can prevent the infection and incidence of EIP in the root canal of chronic apical periodontitis efficiently better than CP.
