The effect of mental health factors on academic performance of medical students

Objective To analyze the differences of mental health and personality from medical students of different academic performance,and discuss the effect of mental health factors on academic performance of medical students.Methods 869 medical students from Liaoning Medical University were surveyed with symptom check list 90,Eysenk personality questionnaire,and common condition questionnaire.Results The results showed that there were statistically significant difference on neuroticism,lie,somatization,obsessive-compulsive,interpersonal sensitivity,depression,anxiety,hostility,psychoticism,and additional items among different academic performance medical students.Structural equation modeling showed that mental health,absenteeism,every month cost of living,life style,friends,neuroticism,and lie can effectively predicted academic performance for medical students by academic performance as the dependent variables.Conclusions Mental health factors impact on medical students' academic performance.Mental health education of medical students should be strengthened.The cultivation of medical students' non-intelligence factors should be paid more attention to.
