First-year Medical Students' Mental Health Status and Its Personality Affecting Factors

Objective:To understand first-year medical students' mental health status and its personaltiy affecting factors.Method: 709 first-year medical students from Fujian Medical University were evaluated with questionnaires of SCL-90、EPQ、SES、UCLA Loneliness after they had studied for half a year.Results: First-year medical students' mental health status was better than that of national university students but was a little worse than that of national youth.16.22% students were found to have symptoms,among them,obsessive-compulsive symptom,interpersonal sensitivity and depression were cardinal symptoms.Male students have more symptoms than female students in the aspect of hostility and paranoid ideation.Those with good mental health scored higher on the positive aspects of personality such as extraversion,high self-esteem and scored lower on the negative aspects of personality such as neuroticism,psychoticism and feelings of loneliness.Students with good mental health usually had a good personality profile.Among these personality affecting factors,self-esteem and neuroticism were most important ones predicting mental health.Conclusions: Personality factors are important factors affecting mental health.Therefore,understanding students' penalty profile must be carried out in the mental health education so that both their mental health and personality could be enhanced.
