The clinical characteristics and treatment of perforating injury of eyeball

Objective To evaluate the clinical characteristics and treatment of patients with perforating injury of eyeball.Methods Eight patients (8 eyes) with perforating injury of eyeball from May 2004 to August 2012 were retrospectively reviewed.The clinical characteristics and the effect of treatment were analyzed.The follow-up time was from 3 to 18 months.Results The postoperative best-corrected visual acuity was improved to different degrees in 8 patients.Two foreign bodies on eyeball wall were extracted.Four foreign bodies persisted in orbit.The one wound at posterior sclera healed well after saturation.The other wound at posterior sclera closed by scar tissue without saturation.There was no complication observed in 8 patients with perforating injury of eyeball.Conclusions Exit foreign bodies on eyeball wall must be extracted.And it is not necessary to forcibly extract the exit foreign bodies in orbit.The wound generally do not need to be sutured.Two-stage vitrectomy is an efficacious method in the treatment of perforating injury of eyeball.It is proper to perform vitrectomy between 7-14 days later.
