Clinic Observation of the effect of Compound trabeculectomy on patients with open-angle glaucoma

Abstract

Objective To evaluate the clinical effect of combined surgery of classic trabeculectomy with adjustable suture and amniotic membrane implantation (compound trabeculectomy) on patients with openangle glaucoma. Methods This study comprised fifty-six patients (112 eyes) that had open-angle glaucoma admitted into our hospital between January 2012 and January 2014. The right eyes of these fifty-six patients (56 eyes) were randomly included in the observation group (fifty-six patients, 56 eyes) treated with the compound trabeculectomy and the left eyes in the control group (fifty-six patients, 56 eyes) treated with classic trabeculectomy alone, respectively. Postoperatively, the intraocular pressure (IOP), filtering bleb morphology, anterior chamber and complications were recorded. The follow-up time was at least 12 months after surgery. Results IOP of 52 eyes, 3 eyes and 1 eye achieved complete success, conditional success and failure in the observation group, respectively, and the total success rate was 98.2% (55/56). IOP of 39 eyes, 4 eyes and 13 eyes achieved complete success, conditional success and failure in the control group, respectively, and the total success rate was 76.8%(43/56). The difference of IOP between groups was statistically significant (χ2=-3.268,P <0.05). Thirty-six eyes, 15 eyes, 3 eyes and 2 eyes formed typeⅠ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ and Ⅳ filtering bleb in the observation group, respectively, and the formation rate of functional filtering bleb was 91.1%(51/56). Thirty eyes, 11 eyes, 9 eyes and 6 eyes formed typeⅠ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ and Ⅳ filtering bleb in the control group, respectively, and the formation rate of functional filtering bleb was 73.2% (41/56). The difference between groups was statistically significant (χ2 =-2.456,P <0.05). There was less complications in the observation group. Conclusions Compound trabeculectomy might effectively increase success rate of surgery for angle-closure glaucoma with less complications.
