Abstract
Eight F_(1) hybrids from intergeneric crosses of S. officinarum and E. arundinaceus were selected to cross with sugarcane commercial varieties. 24 cross combinations were made, 13 of which from six F_(1) clones proved to be cross-fertile and produced a total of 346 BC_(1) hybrids. Results of isozyme analysis showed that 320 progenies displayed Erianthus-specific bands. Significant differences were found not only among the Erianthus F_(1) clones but also among the cross combinations in seedling number per tassel and traits of economic importance. Yield and sucrose traits of the BC_(1) population were mostly lower than those of the commercial varieties (CKs), but for each trait value, the maximum was close to that of the CKs. Preliminary results indicated that YC96-40 and YC95-41 were good parents selected from S. officinarumxE. arundinaceus Hybrids.
