Abstract
Using a correlation method to measure the energies of the two fragments, we have studied the mass distributions of fragments produced in fission of the nuclei /sup 237/Np, /sup 238/U, /sup 242/Pu, and /sup 243/Am by /sup 4/He ions over a wide range of energies. An increase of the yield of symmetric-fission fragments of the compound nucleus /sup 247/Bk is observed, which is interpreted as an increase of symmetric fission on approach to nuclei with Z=100. Data are presented on the total kinetic energies as a function of fragment mass. We also present a statistical analysis of the results for the purpose of determining the difference of the potential energies of symmetric and asymmetric deformations.
