Abstract

Objective To compare the efficacy of citalopram and amitriptyline on the quality of life in senile depression patients. Methods Eighty-six inpatients with senile depression were assigned randomly to citalopram group or amitriptyline group for 8 weeks. The quality of life, efficacy and side effect were assessed with Generic Quality of Life Inventory-74(GQOLI74),Hamilton Depression Rating Scale(HAMD)and Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale(TESS) before and 8 weeks after the treatment respectively. Results The efficacy of citalopram was similar to that of amitriptyline(P0.05),but citalopram had fewer side effects(P0.01).Citalopram′s healthy dimensionalities of body, mental and social function were superior to that of amitriptyline(P0.01).Conclusion Compared with amitriptyline, citalopram can improve the quality of life in senile depression patients.
