Abstract
Objective To investigate the changes and clinical implications of serum sex hormone levels in male patients with liver cirrhosis. Methods The serum sex hormone levels, i.e. testosterone (T), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteotropic hormone (LH), estradiol (E_2) and prolactin (PRL) in male patients with liver cirrhosis were tested by luminescence immune detection techniques and compared with normal examples. Results The levels of serum testosterone (T) and estradiol (E_2) decreased and were significantly different from normal control group (P0.01); Prolactin (PRL) level increased and was significantly different from normal control group (P0.05); follicle- stimulating hormone (FSH) level and luteotropic hormone (LH) level in patients with liver cirrhosis were of no significant difference compared with normal control group (P0.05). Conclusion Changes of sex hormones in patients with liver cirrhosis are associated with liver function damage, which maybe an important factor to cause an abnormal level of sex hormones.
