Yuan Shuxun and the Su Newspaper Case

With a great significance and profound influence,Su Newspaper Case was a major case shocked whole Qing Dynasty and was also a well-known case in the development of Chinese journalism.As a government official of making national boundary in the late Qing Dynasty,Yu Shuxun severely suppressed anti-Qing government patriots and dealt with Su Newspaper Case in person when he was at the post of Daotai.However,he had an advanced thought expressed in his earnest opposing foreign powers' aggression and his maintaining constitutional reform.This paper expounds the fist big crash about the different viewpoint on freedom of journalism between Chinese and Western,and attempts to summarize and comment Yuan Shuxun's complicated life experience.He endeavored to defend state sovereignty,prevent foreigners from building roads cross national boundary and declined the foreign settlement authority to join in Huangpu River Dredging Project.In his bureau,he carried out new policy and perfect policies at his utmost: to firstly establish consultant bureau in Xunfu of Shandong Province,to weed out superfluous personnel,to rectify the official sect,to summit request for establishing Guangdong University,and to suggest holding a congress.He is concerned with such public welfares as charity,education and others in hometown.His patriotic thought can be seen in terms of fighting against foreign powers and advocating transform.He suppressed revolution and strangled Su Newspaper,which displays his loyalty to Qing Dynasty.He is a typical loyalist patriot of feudal times.
