Abstract
Objective: To compare the efficacy and safety of ziprasidone and resperidone in the treatment of schizophrenia. Methods: Sixty-four patients with schizophrenia were randomly assigned as two groups treated with ziprasidone or risperidone for 8 weeks. The positive and negative symptom scale(PANSS) and treatment emergent symptoms scale(TESS)were used t o evaluate the efficacy and adverse effects before and at the end of 2,4,8 weeks of treatment. Results:The total effective rates of ziprasidone and risperidone were 81.2% and 84.3% respectively after 8-week treatments. There was no significant difference between two groups(P0.05).The patients treated with ziprasidone showed fewer side effects including weight gain,Extra Pyramidal Symptoms(EPS) and menses change than the patients with risperidone. Conclusion: Ziprasidone is effective in the treatment of schizophrenia, specifically improving negative symptoms.Ziprasidone has fewer side effects compared with risperidone.
