Abstract
Objective:To an al yze data of clinicopathological characteristics in100cases of pituitary adenoma. Methods:Retro-spective analysis were performed by hematoxylin-eosin stain,ret icular fiber-specific stain(Gomeri),PAS-specific stain and immunohistochemical stain in100cases of pituitary adenoma from Oct1999through Dec2002.Results:One hundred cases of pituitary adenoma were classified by immunohistochemistry,of th em,45%were monohormonal adenoma,inclu-ding17cases of prolactin cell adenoma,11c ases of growth hormone cell adenoma,9cases of adrenocorticotropic hormone cell a denomas and8cases of follicle-stimulating hormonal/luteinizing hormone cell ade noma.Thirteen percent were dou-ble hormonal adenoma,31%were multiple hormones-secreting adenoma and the remaining11%were hormone negative adenoma.These patien ts were clinically classified into functional pituitary adenoma(89%)and non-fun ctional adenoma(11%)according to the clinical symptoms caused by secreted hormon e.Conclusions:Despite of the variform histo-mor-phological characteristics of pituitary adenoma,the close correlation of immunohistochemical results with clin ical manifes-tations suggests that it might be useful in classification and tre atment of pituitary adenoma.
