Abstract

Objective To investigate the preliminary result of artificial lumbar intervertebral disc replacement in treating lumbar disc degeneration. Methods From April 2001 to October 2003, six patients underwent artificial lumbar intervertebral disc replacement with SB Charite III disc prostheses. Results Until October 2003, all patients were followed up for 18～30 months after operation(average 24.5 months).The average preoperative JOA score was 4.83;the average postoperative JOA score was 11.83. Conclusion Artificial lumbar intervertebral disc replacement is a new method for treating the lumbar disc degeneration disease. The preliminary result is satisfactory, but the indications should be strictly limited and its long term result should be investigated.
