Indications for Artificial Intervertebral Disc Replacement

Abstract

Objective:To study the indications for artificial intervertebral disc replacement.Methods:Twenty patients with back and leg pain caused by lumbar intervertebral disc herniation were treated by artificial disc replacement.All patients were followed up for 6～29 months(averaged 16.5 months).The clinical outcomes were assessed.Results:Subjective symptoms and clinical signs of patients were obviously improved.The excellent rate was 100%.X ray film confirmed that the intervertebral height recovered and the prosthesis lied in accurate position.There was no neurovascular injury,no prosthesis was lost or dislocated.No intervertebral height lost or infection occurred.Conclusion:The back and leg pain caused by lumbar intervertebral disc herniation is a main indication of artificial disc replacement.
