An investigation of the defenses style among patients with social phobia

Abstract

Objective To investigate the defense styles, parental rearing patterns and personality characteristics of patients with social phobia,aiming to give psychological interference.Methods Forty-eight patients with social phobia and 48 normal controls were assessed using the Defense Style Questionnaire(DSQ), Egna Minnen av Barndoms Uppfostran(EMBU)and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire(EPQ).Results The scores of DSQ neurotic defense factor and immature mechanism factor were higher in the social phobia group than in the controlled group ( P 0.01). The scores of mature mechanism factor in the social phobia group was significantly lower than that in the controlled group ( P 0.05).Compared with normal controls, the scores of factors of the being punished and refused of the social phobia group were higher, at the same time, the scores of the over protection of father and over partialness of mother were higher. However the scores of factors the being cared was lower. There was a significant difference in the two groups ( P 0.01 or P 0.05 ). The scores of EPQ N factor was higher in the social phobia group than in the controlled group ( P 0.01). The scores of E factor was significantly lower than that in the controlled group ( P 0.01).Conclusion The defense style, parental rearing pattern and personality characteristics of the social phobia group were different from the controlled group. According to this, it supplies evidences to psychological treatment and interference.
