Abstract
English Curriculum Requirements issued by education department in 2004 puts forward the idea that the purpose of college English teaching is to cultivate students' comprehensive ability in language use. To achieve the aim, the author inquires into rationales of the theme-based language teaching approach and its application in college English teaching and learning by choosing New Horizon College English as a research subject. The college English teaching practice indicates that this new mode effectively develops students' ability of using English in a comprehensive way.
