A cognitive comparison of the north- south axis and east- west axis of Beijing

Urban axis is an important component in both urban structure and the landscape,which often covers the most important city heritage in the city. As a world- class historical and cultural city,the north- south axis and the east-west one of Beijing built its distinctive spatial pattern. This essay intends to investigate two axes,and tries to find out the similarities and differences that exist between two axes. Through the method of questionnaires,the grid selection,and expert scoring, this essay elaborates peoples ' cognition about the two axes; meanwhile it analyzes the historical stage of development of the two axes,spatial extent,function,construction and other aspects of representation for analysis. Aiming at the differences of the north- south axis and the east- west axis of Beijing,this essay brings forward proposals for safeguarding and developing.
