Cytogenetic analysis of 358 couples with spontaneous abortion

Abstract

Objective To explore the relationship between spontaneous abortion and chromosome anomaly and its clinical significance. Methods A total of 358 couples who had a history of spontaneous abortion were en-rolled and the lymphocytes were cultured. Karyotypes were analyzed by G-banding in all cases, 20 split-phases of cells were counted under microscope and 3~5 karyotypes were comprehensively analyzed. For the couples with abnormal chromosome number and structure, 100 split phases were counted and the karyotype was double analyzed. Results Of the 358 couples, 32 cases of chromosomal abnormalities (17 females and 15 males) were found, with the overall incidence of 8.94%. Twenty-two cases were found with autosomic abnormality, accounting for 6.14%, and 10 cases were found with sex chromosome abnormalities, accounting for 2.79%. Conclusion Chromosomal ab-normality is an important cause in recurrent spontaneous abortion. For the couples with recurrent spontaneous abortion, examination of the karyotype would help to identify the cause and provide medical advices, ultimately achieve the purpose of prenatal and postnatal care.
