Abstract

Objective: to study the expression of proapoptotic gene Bax in lung carcinoma and its significance Method: immunohistochemical staining with a rabbit anti-human polyclonal antibody Bax was carried out on 113 paraffin-embedded lung carcinoma samples Results: the positive rate of Bax protein was 60 2%(68/113) including 30 of 49 squamous cell carcinomas(61 2%), 26 of 45 adenocarcinomas(57 8%), 3 of 6 small cell carcinomas (50 0%), 5 of 7 large cell carcinomas (71 4) and 4 of 6 small cell carcinomas(66 7%) respectively There was no significant difference between NSCLC and SCLC(P0 05) The expression of Bax protein was not correlated to age, sex (P0 05), but strongly associated with the differentiation degree of the tumor and lymph node metastasis (P0 01 and P0 05). Conclusion: proapoptotic gene Bax which is overexpressed in lung carcinoma may take part in the modulation of apoptosis and is associated with the differentiation of lung carcinoma and lymph node metastasis.
