Assay of Serum Uric Acid in Parkinson's Disease Patients and Its Clinical Significance

Abstract
Objective To investigate the changes of serum uric acid content in patients with Parkinson's disease.Methods Totally 93 patients with Parkinson's disease receiving medical service in the First People's Hospital of Xiangfan City from Junuary 2007 to March 2008 were chosen as trial group,and 91 healthy persons whose age,sex and nationality matched the patients were erolled as the controls.The serum uric acid contents in the two groups were examined and compared.Results The serum uric acid was(270±75)μmol/L in the trial group and(342±62)μmol/L in the controls(t=7.09,P0.01).There were 43 cases in the trial group and 14 cases in the control group who had a low level of serum uric acid(χ2=20.48,P0.01).Conclusion The level of serum uric acid is lower in patients with Parkinson's disease than in normal person.The uric acid as an important antioxidant in nervous system may be of a certain significance in occurrence and development of Parkinson's disease.
