Clinical efficacy of probiotics combined with sulfasalazine in the treatment of ulcerative colitis

Abstract

Objective To evaluate the clinical efficacy of probiotics combined with sulfasalazine in the treatment of ulcerative colitis. Methods Fifty-two patients with ulcerative colitis were randomly divided into two groups,with 26 patients in each group. The control group was treated with sulfasalazine 1.0 g/times, 4 times/d, and the observation group was treated with sulfasalazine combined with probiotics 500 mg/times, 3 times/d, eight weeks as a course. The clinical efficacy in the two groups, disease activity index(DAI), serum IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α level changes were compared. Results After treatment, the total effective rate in the observation group was 96.15%, which was significantly higher than 76.92% in the control group(P0.05). The DAI score in the two groups were both significantly decreased compared with those before treatment, and the score was significantly lower in the observation group than the control group(P0.05). The serum IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α levels in two groups were significantly decreased, which was significantly lower in the observation group than the control group(P0.05). Conclusion Probiotics combined with sulfasalazine in the treatment of ulcerative colitis is better than sulfasalazine alone, and it can further suppress the inflammatory response, improve clinical symptoms.
