Abstract

Objective: To study the MRI characteristics of Wallerian degeneration of the pyramidal tract involved in intracranial diseases, promote the recognition and diagnosis of this kind of degeneration. Methods: Twenty-three cases of Wallerian degeneration of the pyramidal tract involved in intracranial diseases were collected and all the MRI characteristics was analysed. Results: All the primary diseases were above the tentorium of cerebellum,of which 22 cases were located at one side of hemisphere and 1 case was demonstrated bilaterally. The abnormal signal of pyramidal tract was found at the same side of the primary disease,of which brain stems atrophy were found in 9 cases. Conclusion: MRI has large advantages and is quite valuable in the diagnosis of Wallerian degeneration.
