Abstract

Objective To study the effect of thymosin on the serum contents of IL-6 and TNF-α in the patients with serious cerebral injury. Methods Seventy-two patients with serious cerebral injury were divided into treatment group (33 patients) and control group (39 patients). The patients in the treatment group were treated by thymosin. The serum contents of IL-6 and TNF-α were determined respectively by ELISA and radioimmunoassay in all the patients. According to GOS, the prognoses in both the groups were evaluated 1 year after the injury. Results The serum contents of IL-6 and TNF-α were significantly decreased in the control group (P0.05) and treatment group (P0.01) 8 days after the injury compared with two days after the injury. The serum contents of IL-6 and TNF-α were significantly lower in treatment group than those in the control group 8 days after the injury. One year after the injury, the rate of good prognosis (51.52%, 17/33) in the treatment group was significantly higher than that (17.95%, 7/39) in the control group. Conclusion It is suggested that thymosin treatment can decrease the serum contents of IL-6 and TNF-α early after the serious cerebral injury and improve the prognosis of the patients with serious cerebral injury.
