Finite element simulation and contact analysis of drum brakes

Abstract

A three dimensional FEM is established for certain drum brake by using finite element software ANSYS with new interface of Workbench and friction contact between brake drum and friction linings is simulated.By changing the method for imposing boundary conditions and setting parameters for different contact pairs,boundary conditions for contact analysis and method for setting contact pair are determined in simulating the braking process of the drum brakes.The change of braking torque in the process of braking is analyzed by applying three load steps.Thus the distribution character for the contact pressure and equivalent stress and deformation are obtained as friction torque is stable.It provides reference for optimizating the structural parameters and improving the evenwear of drum brakes as well as braking efficiency.
