Abstract

Objective To study the significance of P53 protein and proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA) expressions in prostatic carcinoma. Methods Expressions of P53 protein and PCNA were detected in 30 cases of prostatic carcinoma and 20 cases of benign prostate hypertrophy(BPH) tissue by means of immunohistochemical method. Results 63.3% of prostatic carcinoma was positive for P53 protein expression, while 20 cases of BPH tissue were all negative; PCNA index was much higher in tumor tissue than that in BPH (t′=8.31,P 0.001). The expression of P53 protein and PCNA were related to tumor histological grading and prognosis(P53: H c=7.73,P0.05; z=2.55,P 0.05. PCNA: F=36.25, q=3.25-8.96,P0.01. t=5.255,u c=2.843,P 0.001). The PCNA index in positive cases expressing P53 protein was much higher than that in negative with the PCNA index in prostatic carcinoma( t=4.466,P 0.001). Conclusion P53 mutation might contribute to the development of prostatic carcinoma and enhance the proliferation rate of prostatic carcinoma cells;P53 protein expression and PCNA index could be used as some of the criteria in distinguishing malignant from benign neoplasms of the prostate and predicting prognosis of the disease.
