Abstract
Metaphor is a universal phenomenon of all human languages.Cognitive linguistics thinks that metaphor is not merely a rhetorical phenomenon in literary creation,but a mould of thinking and cognition as well,playing a very important role in the thinking process of mankind.This essay makes an attempt to analyse and discuss the metaphoric phenomenon in language from the perspective of cogonitive linguistics,aiming at exploring the historical developmental trend of metaphor study from rhetoric orietation to cogonitive orietation,the cognitive nature of metaphor and its cognitive psychological basis,its cognitive fuction,and its production and understanding.
