Abstract
Objective To assess the effects of quetiapine and risperidone on the blood glucose ,body weight and lipid levels in elderly patients with dementia. Methods A total of 60 patients with senile dementia were randomly divided into quetiapine group and risperidone group.Planed assessments included blood glucose, total cholestrol (TC),triglycerides (TG),high density lipoprotein-cholesterol(HDL),low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL) and the body weight, which were collected at baseline ,the end of 4th and 8th week after treatment. Results After 8-week treatment, the levels of body weight and LDL were significanlty higher and the levels of HDL were lower than those before treatment in quetiapine group (P 0.05). Quetiapine group showed significantly larger changes of body weight and LDL at the end of the treatment than risperidone group (P 0.05).Conclusion Quetiapine has more effects on the body weight and lipid levels than risperidone in patients with senile dementia.
