Choice of the Marked Theme in English Discourse

Abstract

The marked theme is a variant of the unmarked theme in a given context.The choice of the marked theme expresses certain pragmatic meaning and communicative purposes.Various reasons for choosing the marked theme instead of the unmarked theme in English discourse are discussed,based on the relevant theories of cognition,context,discourse,style and rhetoric,so as to know more about its uniqueness and charm.
