Abstract

With the traditional Linguistics' limitations of rigidly stickling to language forms becoming more and more prominent,Halliday, the founder of SFL,advanced the theory of systemic functional discourse analysis, for which he owed debt to Harris' theory of discourse analysis and Mathesius' theory of theme and rheme.Halliday divided theme into experiential theme, interpersonal theme and textual theme, and advanced the idea of marked and unmarked theme.Based on the studies home and abroad, this paper explores the thematic theory and the specific moods of theme progression, and discusses the concrete implication of theme progression in discourse construction in the examples of English and Chinese discourses.
