Abstract

Objective To evaluate the clinical efficacy and side effects of citalopram in the treatment of senior depression. Methods Sixty patients who met the CCMD-3 criteria were divided into two groups in random, and treated with citalopram or amitriptyline for six weeks. The efficacy was assessed by Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, and the side effects by Treatment Emergent Symptoms Scale. Results The effective rates of citalopram and amitriptyline were 93.33% and 96.67%,respectively.There was no significant difference between the two groups(χ2=0.35,P0.05).The main side effects commonly seen in citalopram were nausea, dry mouth, and headache. But it had fewer side effects than amitriptyline. Conclusion Citalopram is safe and effective with fewer side effects for elder depressed patients.
