Abstract

An anaerobic sludge fermentation reactor was designed to conduct a small-scale test for production of acetic acid from sludge. The results of 6-month experiment indicated that pH and substrate concentration had significant effect on acid and hydrogen production from anaerobic fermentation of sludge.Under normal temperature conditions, the hydrogen production rate was 6.88 mL /gVS at pH of6.5,and the accumulative hydrogen production was 1 122 mL when the mass fraction of the substrate was10%,and the fermentation time was 120 h.At the same time, the anaerobic fermentation system also had optimum acid production characteristic. The content of VFA was only 465 mg /L when the substrate was uninoculated, and the fermentation time was 120 h,but the content of VFA was 1 125 mg /L when the mass fraction of the substrate was 10%.
