Effects of valsartan on heart rate variability in hypertensive patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(DM)

Abstract

Objective To investigate the effect of valsartan on heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with essential hypertension (EH) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Methods Sixty patients with EH and DM took valsartan (80mg/d) orally for 8 weeks. The changes of HRV were analyzed and compared with that of 56 healthy controls. Results The HRV of patients with EH and DM was lower than that of the normal controls. After valsartan treatment the SDNN RMSSD PNN 50 and HF increased but LFHF decreased markedly. Conclusion Valsartan can increase cardiac vagal activity and decrease sympathetic activity in patients with EH and DM which suggests that valsartan may reduce the arrhythmic mortality.
