Abstract
Objective To investigate the effect of telmisartan on heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with essential hypertension (EH) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Methods 50 patients with EH and DM took telmisartan (80mg/d) orally for 8 weeks. The change of HRV were analyzed and compared with that of 40 healthy controls. Results The HRV of patients with EH and DM was lower than that of normal controls. After telmisartan treatment, the SDNN, RMSSD, PNN 50 and HF increased but LF/HF decreased markedly(P0.01). Conclusion Telmisartan can increase cardiac vagal activity and decrease sympathetic activity in patients with EH and DM, which suggests that telmisartan may reduce the arrhythmic mortality.
