Abstract
AIM: To investigate the efficacy of topiramate (TPM) in the add on treatment of various types of refractory epilepsy seizures. METHODS: Two hundred and eighteen patients with refractory epilepsy were all treated with antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). The method of desage adding was used. The dosage adding period was 8 wk, 25 mg·d -1 of TPM at the begining and the target dosage was 200 mg·d -1 , After 12 wk of observation, TPM treatment was prolonged. RESULTS: After TPM treatment 26 patients (12.3 %) became seizure free, 59 patients (28.0 %) were ≥75 % seizure reduction, 107 patients (50.7 %) were ≥50 % seizure reduction, 19 patients (9.0 %) remained unacceptable seizure control. Five patients (2.3 %) were discontinue treatment with adverse reactrons, two patients were lost contact with reason not clear. CONCLUSION: TPM is a very effective new AED and worthy of clnical application and dissemination.
