Abstract
Objective To assess the efficacy and safety of Topiramate (TPM)monotherapy in patients with intractable epilepsy(IE).Methods 32 patients were given TPM monotherapy(25mg once a day),the targeted dosage was 100mg TPM.There were 3 periods to reach the goal dosage:the baseline period(4weeks) to observe the seizure rate;the increase period(4~8 weeks) to increase dose to the goal dosage;the dose maintain period was 12 weeks. 30 patients were given TPM combined with other antiepileptics as control. Results In the active group 65.6% patients became seizure-free and the significaant effective rate was 78.1% with the incidence of side effect being 50%,most of which were mild and transient. In the control group the above three indexes were 13.3%,20.0%and 83.3%respectively.There was significant difference between the two groups( P 0.05).Conclusion TPM is an effective and safe agent for treatment of epilepsy.
