Abstract
Objective To assess the efficacy and side effects of topiramate (TPM) as an add-on therapy in patients with refractory epilepsy. Methods The efficacy and side effects of TPM were tested in 18 patients with refractory epilepsy. The efficacy was assessed by comparing the average frequency per month after TPM added up to maintenance period to the baseline therapy.The efficacy and side effects of topiramate were observed at baseline and after treatment with TPM. Results Seizure frequency reduction by ≥50% was found in 50% of patients and 3 patients became seizure-free.Moderate adverse effects was found in 52 6% of patients. Including anorexia and events related to the central nevous system. Conclusions Add-on therapy with TPM is an effective and safe treatment for the patients with refractory epilepsy.
