Effect of coping styles and personality characteristics on the quality of life in patients with mental disorder due to use of alcohol

Objective:To investigate effects of the coping styles and personality characteristics on the quality of life in patients with mental disorder due to use of alcohol.Methods:55 cases of patients with mental disorder due to use of alcohol(study group) and 43 cases of local citizens without a history of alcohol abuse(control group) were surveyed with coping styles questionnaire(CSQ) and Eysenck personality questionnaire(EPQ) and the Generic Quality of life Inventory-74(GQOLI-74),were the relevant factors analyzed.Results:①The coping styles in study group were self-accusation,mirage and retreat.The personality characteristic of study group was psychoticism.②The total score and the scores of all dimensions except material life in GQOLI-74 in study group were significantly lower than that of the control group,the difference between the two groups was statistically significant(P0.01).③It was revealed that the study group GQOLI-74 total score and solving difficulties,assistance,introvision-extrovision and lying were positive correlation,but only assistance was relevant statistical significance(P 0.01).In the GQOLI-74 total score and negative correlated factors,only the rationalization,retreat,spiritual quality were relevant statistical significance(P0.05 or P0.01).Conclusion:The quality of life in patients with mental disorder due to use of alcohol was affected by their own psychological characteristics.To give the corresponding psychological treatment according to their psychological characteristics can help the patients with chronic alcoholism to improve their quality of life.
