Abstract

Objective: To study the times and indications of tracheotomy for inhalation injury.Method: The data of 110 patients with inhalation injury from 1992 to 2004 were retrospectively analyzed. Results: Tracheotomy was operated on 57 patients in 1~12 hours,22 in 13~24 hours, and 31 in more than 24 hours after burn, and there were 9,6,and 18 deaths after operation respectively. The mortality rate was higher in 1~12 hours group than other two groups(both P0.01),but no significant difference was found between the two later groups(P0.05).Mortality rate was higher in moderate and severe patients than in gentle patients(both P0.01),but no significant difference was found between moderate and severe patients. Conclusion: Both moderate and severe inhalation injuries are indication of tracheotomy, and the effect is better in early tracheotomy.
