Abstract

Objective to investigate the rational application of tracheotomy in burn patients with inhalation injury. Methods A retrospective case study on all patients for tracheotomy admitted with burn inhalation injury from 1989 to 2000 (n=174) was carried out. Results The time of tracheotomy in mild, moderate and severe inhalation injury group was 27.6 h,18.6 h and 12.7 h postburn respectively;the average day of intubations was 13.8 d,14.7 d and 18.7 d postoperation respectively;the mortality rate was 3.3%,5.8% and 40% respectively. Conclusion The indications of tracheotomy can be lenient for the patients with severe burned face and neck in closure space.Tracheotomy has preventive and therapeutic effects during 24 hours postburn.
