Semantic and Pragmatic Functions of "a" Verbs in Dialect of Xianyou,Putian

Abstract

The dialect in Xianyou,Putian is characterized with adding a prefix a- before a one-syllable dynamic verb.The structure of a-V forms a two-syllable verb.And a- as a prefix has its particular semantic and pragmatic functions.This paper holds that the prefix a- is in the transitional state from a pragmatic level to a grammatical level. Its usage belongs to one of the distinctive grammatical phenomenon in the dialects in Fujian.
