Abstract

Since early Republic of China,Chinese translation of foreign poems has been based on two different layers of knowledge and forms of language-literary or vernacular Chinese. It is an increasingly important practice in the intercommunication between Chinese and Western cultures.Regarding it as the construction of Chinese modernization, the New Culture school advocates translation in vernacular Chinese and new prosodies, and abandons literary Chinese and its traditional rhythms. However, the endeavor of poetry translation in literary Chinese throughout the whole 20th century manifests its evident cultural significance.
