A study on serum interleukin-6 level and risk factors in patients with obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome associated with hypertension

Objective To investigate the serum IL-6 level in patients with simple snore,obstructive sleep apneahypopnea syndrome(OSAHS) without complication and OSAHS associated with hypertension (HT),to analyze the correlation between IL-6 level and OSAHS and OSAHS associated with HT,and to explore the risk factors of OSAHS associated with HT.Methods A hundred and fourty non-smoking male patients were enrolled,among which 29 were simple snore and served as controls (N group),55 were OSAHS without complication (O group) and 56 were OSAHS associated with HT (OH group).Serum IL-6 concentration was measured and age,body mass index (BMI),Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS),polysomnogram (PSG) parameters [apnea hypopnea index(AHI),oxygen desaturation index(ODI),percent of time spent below 90% oxygen saturation (Ts90%),lowest SpO 2 during sleep,LowSpO 2 (LowSpO 2)] were recorded.Serum IL-6 level was compared among these three groups and its relationship with PSG parameters was analyzed.The risk factors of OSAHS associated with hypertension were explored by Logistic regression analysis.Results Serum IL-6 concentration in OH group [(16.79±5.45) pg/mL]) was significantly higher than that in O group [(11.07±2.65) pg/mL] and N groups [(5.90±1.85) pg/mL].Serum IL-6 level was correlated positively with AHI,ODI,Ts90% and negatively with LowSa0 2 in both O group (r=0.873,0.514,0.605,0.412,-0.614,P≤0.05) and OH group(r=0.673,0.673,0.543,-0.489,P=0.013).BMI (OR=5.443,6.893,P 0.01)and IL-6 (OR=3.258,6.654)were risk factors of OSAHS associated with hypertension.Conclusions Inflammatory factor IL-6 may play a role in the occurrence of hypertension and its level was correlated with the severity of OSAHS and degree of hypoxemia.BMI and high level of serum IL-6 may be the risk factors of OSAHS associated with hypertension.
