Abstract
Objective: To study the relationship between serum resistin level and insulin resistance in subjects with different body mass indexes(BMI) and glucose tolerance statuses. Methods: 52 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM),18 patients with impaired glucose regulation(IGR),and 30 normal controls with normal glucose tolerance(NGT) were selected, and each group were divided into obese and non-obese subgroups according to BMI.The level of fasting serum resistin was measured by enzyme linked immunoadsorbent assay, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance(HOMA-IR) was calculated. Results: In T2DM group and NGT group, the levels of serum resistin in obese subgroup were higher than those in non-obese subgroup. But only in T2DM group, the difference in serum resistin levels was significant(P0.05).The levels of serum resistin in IGR group was higher those in T2DM group and NGR group. The level of fasting serum resistin was positively correlated with BMI,HOMA-IR,triglyceride level, fasting insulin level, and 2-hour postprandial insulin level. No correlation was found both between the level of fasting serum resistin and writst-to-hip ratio and between the level of fasting serum resistin and the level of fasting blood glucose. Conclusion: The obese subjects with T2DM and NGT have obvious insulin resistance, which is correlated closely with the level of serum resistin.Resistin may be used as an indicator to predict the occurrence of diabetes mellitus.
