Abstract

Zhang Jian's main contribution to China's modern music history is his school songs. In addition, his early attempt at specialized music education included not only the establishment of a drama school in 1919 in Nantong, Jiangsu Province, aiming at training new drama actors and actresses and reforming dramas, but as well the affiliation of classes for Western instruments and a military band.
